How to Add Film Grain to Video Without Overdoing It

Add film grain as the very last step in your effect chain, keep it subtle enough that it is barely visible on a paused frame, and choose fine grain for a 35mm feel or coarse grain for 16mm and home movies.

Grain is the single most overused effect in the business, and the reason is simple: it looks right on a still and wrong in motion.

Paused, a heavy grain reads as texture and character. Playing, the same grain crawls. Every particle changes every frame, and that motion pulls the eye off whatever you wanted it looking at.

What grain actually was

Film is an emulsion of silver halide crystals. Light strikes a crystal, the crystal develops, and the developed crystals form the image. The crystals are randomly distributed and randomly sized, so the image has a random texture baked into its structure.

Faster film needs larger crystals to catch less light, which is why high-ISO stock is grainier. Bigger film gates spread the image over more crystals, which is why 35mm looks finer than 16mm.

That gives you a rule worth remembering: grain size implies both the format and the light. Coarse grain says small format or a dark set. Fine grain says large format or plenty of light.

The types, and what each one suggests

Those last three are not grain and should not be used as if they were. Static and scanlines belong to video and displays. Reaching for them to imply film is a category error the audience feels without being able to name.

How much

Start lower than you think, then judge it in motion, never paused.

A practical test: play the clip at full size and look at a flat area, like a sky or a wall. If you can see the grain moving there as a distinct layer, it is too strong. Grain should be something you notice when it is removed, not when it is present.

Grain goes last

In the physical chain, grain came at the end. Light passed through the lens, formed an image, and that image was recorded by the emulsion. The emulsion was the last thing to touch it.

So in an effect chain, grain sits on top of everything: after any line work, after any color separation, after any blur.

Get that order wrong and the tell is immediate. Grain applied before a displacement gets dragged around by it, which produces smeared streaks that read as a compression artifact. Grain applied before a color split gets split too, so each particle sprouts a colored twin, which no film stock ever did.

The exception worth knowing

If you are imitating a specific chain, follow that chain rather than this list. Footage shot on film and then scanned has grain from the emulsion. Footage shot digitally and printed to film and rescanned has grain applied to an already-digital image. A digital intermediate that was graded after scanning has grain that got graded along with everything else.

Most of the time none of this matters. When it does, it is because someone is comparing your shot to real footage from a specific era, and then the order of operations is the whole game.
